European orientation
European Commission has given this programme international recognition and allure by awarding an Erasmus+ grant to Netherlands Business Academy. A collaboration of six European institutions in the field of culture and higher education is working on an interdisciplinary and joint European MBA CHC Curriculum. This experience and network of contacts will enable our Culture, Heritage & Citizenship MBA students to grow into international, all-round leaders who can combine knowledge of cultural processes with innovative, business acumen.
Citizenship
In international networks and associations of the broad heritage sector (museums, archives, monuments and performing arts), the theme of citizenship as a guiding principle for future policy is highly topical. There is still a lack of an interdisciplinary approach that brings together management of citizenship programmes and that of culture and public buildings/institutions. Gradually, parties in the market are coming to the conclusion that citizens’ participation in the solutions of social issues must be organised in a completely different way. Too many self-equipped providers are still merely suppliers of services to the (subsidising) government.
Business-oriented approach
A more entrepreneurial and business-like approach to the market for successful citizens’ initiatives deserves a solid theoretical and practical knowledge offer that can provide interested lay people (citizens) as well as NGOs and interested companies with the knowledge to achieve continuity from a project practice in such a way that a network of knowledge and experience institutes can develop so that the role of the government will change from being a provider of money to that of a full-fledged interlocutor in increasingly complex change processes in society.
Business management of cultural citizenship
To fulfil the above, there is a need for general complementary knowledge in a number of business disciplines. The MBA as a general training for managers is ideally suited for this. The uniqueness of the programme lies in the interface between the management of non-governmental (cultural and socio-cultural) organisations and the management of European citizenship in action. There is a great need for broad fundamental knowledge in both fields. The combination of both in an integrated approach will not only enhance the professionalism of individual participants and their companies, but will also be able to give a qualitative boost to the necessary internationalization within the EU.
Unique programme
This MBA programme is the only programme in the Netherlands and Flanders that links theory from different disciplines with practical experience in one integrated programme that directly addresses the unruly practice where executives have to combine traditional management techniques and specialised professional knowledge with the increasing demand for connection with models of citizen participation. Moreover, the training can be taken part-time, ideal for practitioners with some years of experience who want to upgrade their CV. This can significantly improve the sustainability and continuity of their own business or a subsequent one.
Perspective
Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be able to rightfully call himself an active citizenship expert. This officer will be able to render good services to a wide variety of NGOs, informal initiatives and networks in the public domain. From (social) media initiatives to museums; from private institutions to public services and companies.
